CFL - Argos 29, Renegades 18

Lets just call it a moral victory and stop there.

Ok maybe just bit about the game. It started out as hopeful as any Renegade game, the score was tied at 3 after the fist quarter, then as usual it fell apart in the last few minutes of the second quarter and couldn't quite make it back in the second half. Notice how all that seems so familiar and with out the words Argos that sentence would describe almost all the Renegades games this year.
The two teams traded field goals in the first quarter as Ottawa did a good job of keeping the Argo offence off the field and at one point Ottawa was actually ahead in the second quarter as Yo Murphy scored a TD after an amazing twist filled run to the endzone. After that however it was the usual slide down the hill. Toronto scored 2 touchdown in the final 3:30 of the first half and never looked back after that.
Ottawa's punter Pat Fleming gave up a safety in the third quarter and then in the 4th Toronto added a 34 field goal to make it 22-11. Ottawa did score a nice 75 yard touchdown pass from Kerry Joseph to Jason Amrstead to make it 22-18 but with 5:34 to go Toronto scored a TD to put the game, and the Renegades playoff hopes out of reach.
Kerry Joseph played reasonably well, he was 18 for 27 with 2 TDs and 220 yards passing, but once again he threw 2 interceptions. On the ground the Renegades started strong in the first quarter but gave up on the ground game after that. Ranek carried the ball 9 times for 40 yards, most of it in the first quarter and Kerry Joseph carried the ball 10 times for 43 yards. Ranek and Joseph accounted for all of Ottawa's yards on the ground and you aren't going to win many games with less that 100 yards on the ground.
Armstead lead the way for the Renegades in the receiving department, he caught 9 passes for 143 yards.
Ottawa's next game is October 7th against the Hamilton Tiger-cats as the two teams open a home and home series. I wouldn't get to excited and start thinking about any 2 game winning streaks any time soon Ottawa.

NHL Preseason - Calgary 5, Edmonton 0

Where do I start? Well they stunk would be a good start, and Ty "I can't stop a puck" Conklin was horrible. One shot, that's all he could stop in the 3rd period, thank god the Flames only had 5 shots. Calgary scored once in the second period and Ty Conklin may or may not have been on earth in the third as he only stopped one, yes that's right one, of the 5 shots that Calgary had in the third period as the Flames pounded Edmonton 5-0. Shots were 7-5 for Calgary in the first, 15 to 6 for Calgary in the second and 8 to 5 for Edmonton in the third period (thank god they only had 5 shots). Overall Calgary out shot Edmonton 27-19 (thank god they only had 5 shots in the 3rd). The Flames were 1 for 9 on the powerplay and the Oilers were 0 for 4.
This latest effort by Mr. Conklin (and I use the word "effort" in the loosest way possible) doesn't exactly leave me feeling all warm and fuzzy about the Oilers goaltending (or lack there of). Obviously Conklin isn't up to the task, at least he hasn't shown that yet. Markkanen is unproven and out with an injury, he should be back by mid October. This leaves the Oilers with (drum roll please) Mike Morrison as the best goalie in camp. Who is Mike Morrison? I'm not sure either, the NHL web page has no info on him, infact I've tried many pages and have found no info on him. So that's it, the Oilers are once again relying on an unknown to come through and show up big time. I hope he does because Conklin isn't doing much of anything, oh yea he stopped a puck in the third period last night (thank god they only had 5 shots).

Renegades at Argos

Tonight the Ottawa Renegades will limp in to Toronto and try to salvage what's left of their ever increasingly slim playoff hopes. Ottawa has lost 4 strait coming into the game and it won't be easy. The Argo's aren't exactly in a good mood as they were beaten by the Saskatchewan Roughriders last week and are out for some revenge. Enter the Ottawa Renegades the CFL's whipping boys of late. If you need a losing streak to come to an end or want to stop one before it starts the Renegades are there for you. Once again all indications are that Kerry Joseph is going to start the game........Lets hope the Joe Paopao doesn't stick with him too long and shoves Brad Banks in to the game. I'd really like to see what he could do for the Renegades next year. There it is, the perennial cry of a Renegades fan (or any team based in Ottawa for that matter) - Next Year. Game time is 7:30pm and the game is on TSN (I hope the CBC thing gets settled soon - it's gonna affect my NHL viewing)

CFL - Ottawa Renegades

TSN is reporting that the Renegades have acquired DL Donnavan Carter from the Hamilton Tiger Cats in exchange for a 4th round selection in the 2006 draft.
What exactly this is going to do to help the horrible offence I'm not really sure, but it should help to plug a defensively hole. It seems a bit sad to me that the Renegades have had to turn to the worst team in the CFL for help. Don't get me wrong I like Carter and I felt the team lost a lot defensively when he left 2 years ago, I'm just not sure how much he's going to be able to help out at this point.

NHL Preseason

Edmonton 4, Calgary 0

Well the Oilers finally did it, they won a game in regulation. It took till almost the end of the preseason to do it but they managed to do it. Chris Pronger opened the scoring for Edmonton in the first period as the Oilers out shot Calgary 15 - 6. Ethan Moreau scored early in the second period as the Oilers outshot the Flames 13 - 2. In the third period Bergeron scored on the power play and Hemsky added another goal as the Oilers jumped out to a 4 - 0 lead and held on to win the game. The Flames out shot Edmonton 13 - 11 in the third period, overall Edmonton out shot Calgary 39 - 21. The Flames were 0 for 7 on the powerplay wile Edmonton was 2 for 12. Mike Morrison played the entire game between the pipes for Edmonton as he made a strong case for a spot on the roster come October 5th, he stopped all 21 shots he faced.
The Oilers face the Flames again tonight in Calgary and finish the preseason with a game in Vancouver this Saturday.

Renegades/Stampeders Preview

How many times have we heard this one? The Renegaes/Rough Riders head coach (insert name here) is standing by his starting QB (insert name here) for their upcoming game against the (insert opponent here).
Well - The Renegades head coach Joe Paopap is standing behind his starting QB Kerry Joseph for their up coming game against the Calgary Stampeders.
This is the back drop for tonight's Renegades vs Stampeders game for tonight in Calgary at 10:00pm eastern. Knowing how things work in Ottawa, Joseph will play just well enough to deserve having one more chance to start the next game.
With the Renegades losing the last 4 games this is (everyone now again) "a must win game". It Ottawa loses they will deal a huge blow to their fading playoff chances. The game is also a big one for Calgary as they are tied with Saskatchewan for 2nd and only 2 points behind first place Edmonton in the west.
Tonight's game is on TSN and it should be a good one.

NHL - Oilers 5, Vancouver 4 (OTSO)

The Oilers found their way back to the win column last night, it once again took overtime and a shoot out but they won. So far in 4 games the Oilers have still not won in regulation.
Edmonton didn't look too good in the first as Ty Conklin looked shaky stopping only 9 of the 12 shots he faced. Ales Hemski's fist of the preseason was Edmonton's only goal in the first period as Vancouver out shot Edmonton 12-10.
There was no scoring in the Second period as the Oilers out shot the Canucks 9-5.
Ethan Moreau scored early in the second period to pull the Oilers to with in one goal of the Canucks, but with Vancouver scoring mid-way through the 3rd period it took Ales Hemski's second of the game and Mike Peca's first of the preseason with less than 5:00 to go in the period to pull Edmonton even 4-4. The Oilers outshot Vancouver 11-9 in the third period.
Edmonton outshot Vancouver 4-2 in the scoreless overtime and it took Edmonton's 6th shooter of the night, Radek Dvorak, to win the game. Overall Ty Conklin stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced as the Oilers out shot Vancouver 34-28. The Oilers were 1 for 10 on the power play and Vancouver was 3 for 10.

NHL - Dallas Wins Again??!!

The Dallas Stars continue to dominate the Oilers, be it preseason, regular season or playoffs the Oilers can't seem to buy a win against Dallas. The Oilers actually lead 3-2 after the first period in which Dallas out shot Edmonton 13-12. Jerret Stoll scored twice, collecting his 2nd and 3rd goals of the preseason, in the opening frame for Edmonton and Rob Schremp got his first of the preseason.
The second period saw Dallas completely dominate Edmonton as they out shot the Oilers 10-3, Todd Harvey got the only goal for the Oilers midway through the period.
The Oilers and Stars started the 3rd period tied at 4-4, but as always Modano, Guerin and Arnott proved to be too much as all three players were in on both goals that Dallas scored as they won the game 6-4 and out shot the Oilers 11-7 in the third and 34-22 overall in the game.
This game marks 3 games in a row that the Oilers have not won in regulation time. In goals for the Oilers were Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers, who stopped 14 of 18 shots, and Devan Dubnyk, who came in at the 12:29 mark of the 2nd period, stopping 14 of the 16 shots he faced.

NHL - Goalies No Longer Take Loss in Overtime

Just and interesting little tid bit of info for the upcoming season, goalies will no longer be tagged with the loss when their team loses in overtime as they have in seasons past. Instead they will have Wins, Loses (in regulation) and Overtime Loses (loses in overtime or in the shootout). Again it's an interesting tid bit, not really news.

Ottawa Renegades

Heres a complete list of injuries from Ottawa's lost to Winnipeg last Friday night. FB Gilles Lezi (right ankle sprain) and LB Cam Yeow (right knee) are both questionable for Thursday nights game against Calgary. LB Kyries Hebert (knee), OL Fred Moore (knee), DB Quincy Coleman (lower back sprain) and DB Kai Ellis (finger) are all probable for the next game.
With so many injured and out on the offensive line I don't expect Kerry Joseph to get much protection, and as usual I don't expect much out of the secondary either.

$99 Season Tickets

Seems the Renegades promotions departments been busy lately, they announced that they will extend the $99 season ticket packages into next season. The proved to be quite popular this season as over 5,000 packages were sold. The also announced some promotions for the upcoming home games. The October 7th game against the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will be "Pajama Party" night with the winner being determined by who collects the most stickers. The October 29th game against Montreal will be "Halloween Party" night, best costume wins and the November 5th season finally against Toronto will be "Elf" night. Not sure if the Elves should play or the Renegades!

Sports Stuff

Renegades News

Seems the Renegades lost more than just the game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last Friday night, fullback Gilles Lezi and linebacker Cam Yeow both suffered sprained ankles and are doubtful for Thursday night's game in Calgary.
The Renegades are also apparently looking at former NY Jets QB Troy Woodbury. They aren't looking at him to replace Kerry Joseph though, they are looking at him as a wide receiver. He hasn't played in the NFL since 2002 so I'm not holding my breath that he's gonna make a huge difference.

Oilers News

The Edmonton Oilers have assigned Brad Radunske to Hamilton, with Radunske's assignment the Oilers are down to 46 players in camp.

Bears/Oilers

Chicago Bears 38, Detroit Lions 6

The Bears completely dominated the 2nd quarter on route to an easy win over the Lions 38-6. The Bears racked up 21 points in the second quarter as they jumped out to a 31-6 half time lead. The Bears opened the scoring with an impressive 43 yard TD drive off a Lions turnover. The Lions responded quickly with a 51 yard TD pass, but as a bad omen to the Lions the point after was blocked and those 6 points would be the only points the Lions would get for the rest of the afternoon.
Other notables from the game were the poise of Bears' rookie QB Kyle Orton who was 14 for 21 with 150 yards of passing. Running back Tomas Jones carried the ball 20 times for 139 yards, he had more yards after jus one quarter then the Bears managed the entire game against Washington last week. Over all the Bears had 37 carries for 187 yards.

Dallas Stars 6, Edmonton Oilers 5 (OTSHO)

Edmonton must like the overtime shootout, for the second strait preseason game the Oilers couldn't win it in regulation, but this time there would be no dramatic shootout win as yet again the Stars beat the Oilers. The Stars were out to a 2-0 lead before the first period was even 2 minutes old and added one more at the half way mark to lead 3-0 at the end of one period. Edmonton was out shot 12-7 in the first period.
In the second period the Oilers seemed to find there legs and out shot Dallas 14-6 as Zack Stortini got the Oilers on the board at the 0:52 mark. Raffie Torres and Mark-Antoine Pouloit also scored for Edmonton as the Oilers closed the gap to 4-3 at the end of 2 periods.
Fernando Pisani pulled the Oilers even midway through the third, but Dallas pulled ahead 5-4 less than 20 seconds later. It took a goal from Steve Staios with 45 seconds left to pull the Oilers even again. Shots in the third period were even at 9 a piece.
The Stars and Oilers decided nothing in the overtime period as Dallas out shot Edmonton 3-1.
Dallas scored on the 3rd and final shot as none of Edmonton shooters could score giving Dallas yet another win over Edmonton.
Overall the Oilers out shot Dallas 31-30. Dallas was 0-5 on the powerplay and Edmonton converted just 1 of its 9 powerplay chances. Ty Conklin started the game in nets for Edmonton stopping just 13 of the 17 shots he faced. Jeff Drouin-Deslauriers (thank god I'm not a play by play announcer) stepped in at the 9:31 mark of the second and stopped 12 of the 13 shots fired at him.

Renegades/Oilers

Winnipeg Blue Bombers 37 Ottawa Renegades 21

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers beat the Ottawa Renegades 37-21 in a wet mistake filled game in front of 17,567 fans. The Blue Bombers snapped their 3 game losing streak and the Renegades extended theirs to 4 games now and may be out of the playoffs. This was a must win for Ottawa and things looked good at half time with Ottawa up 21-19, the third quarter saw no scoring and then Winnipeg scored 18 un answered points in the 4th quarter. Ottawa almost had a field goal to make things interesting, but the ball hit the cross bar and bounce out rather than in. That single play seems to describe the whole game for Ottawa, the whole season for that matter, almost there but not quite. It wasn't the kickers fault, it wasn't the holders fault and it wasn't the snappers fault either, it was a combined effort. Losses in Ottawa are always combined effort of mistakes. A lot of players played well, but for every good play they made they also shot themselves in the foot too. Winnipeg wasn't without it's mental mistakes either, I can't count the number of times they were called for offside on defense.
In the end all that this game managed to tell fans is that Ottawa is about the same level as Winnipeg - and Winnipeg isn't exactly a team that you want to compare yourself too.

Edmonton Oilers 2 Calgary Flames 1

In the first NHL game for both teams in over a year the Edmonton Oilers beat the Calgary Flames 2-1 in an overtime shootout under the new NHL rules in front of sellout crowd of 16,839. Calgary got the scoring under way in the second period with a short-handed goal from Lombardi. The Oilers finally got there powerplay clicking midway through the third period as Stoll scored on goalie Brent Krahn. The 5 min. overtime decided nothing and all 3 shooters for both teams failed to score in the shootout forcing a sudden death shoot out. Calgary has first chance at it and Nystrom missed leaving it up to Ryan Smyth as he scored a nice back hander to win the game for the Oilers.
Mike Morrison played well in goals stopping 24 of the 25 shots he faced as Edmonton out shot Calgary 31-25 overall in the game. Other notables, Chris Pronger had an assist in his Oiler debut and Rob Schremp got the first star of the game for his gritty performance.
